All-Ages Rec: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl

Updated: Aug 18, 2020

"Squirrel Girl, Squirrel Girl, powers of both squirrel and girl! Finds some nuts, eats some nuts! Kicks bad guys' evil butts!"

Doreen Green AKA Squirrel Girl is off to college! With the companionship of her loyal squirrel Tippy-Toe and her roommate Nancy, she's going to figure out how to keep the world safe as (kind of) part of the Avengers, while also figuring out how to pass her classes.

It's an absolutely ridiculous wild ride and I loved every second of it. The whole series is both comedic and light-hearted, with "cartoon-y" art and silly asides (make sure to check the bottom of every page for a ridiculous footnote!), but is, I think, also about one of the more relatable superheroes out there. Because yes, Squirrel Girl definitely "eats nuts and kicks butts" and can talk to squirrels. But the real reason she's unbeatable? Because that's not all she does — she just as often will win by talking it through or finding another solution and coming to a compromise. Which are things anyone, superhero or not, can do.

These can be read with absolutely no prior knowledge of other Marvel comics, so don't worry if you haven't read many (or any!). But there are also a lot of fun cameos, especially involving Iron Man. So check it out! The library currently has volumes 1-8. Ryan North writes them, and Erica Henderson is the artist for the first eight volumes.

"Wolverine, Deadpool, Doctor Doom, Thanos: There's one hero that's beaten them all and now she's got her own ongoing series! (Not that she's bragging.) That's right, you asked for it, you got it, it's SQUIRREL GIRL! (She's also starting college this semester.) It's the start of a brand-new set of adventures starring the nuttiest and most upbeat superhero in the world!"
